Why is the e-car range crucial?

Basically, before buying any car, whether electric or not, you should think about your own driver profile and select an appropriate vehicle. E-cars with a low range are ruled out from the outset for some areas of application. With e-cars in particular, however, range is an important comfort factor in addition to necessity. After all, it also ensures that you have to recharge the e-car less often. It is therefore not surprising that, according to a survey by the German Association of Energy and Water Industries (bdew), the range of an e-car is the issue that most concerns potential e-car drivers before they buy. The range is not a guaranteed figure, but rather describes the realistic consumption of the e-car in relation to the battery capacity. In winter in particular, you also have to reckon with a 10% to 30% reduction in range, as the heating in the car also consumes electricity. The capacity of a battery also decreases slightly with each charging cycle. You will not notice an effect so quickly, but you must expect a slightly reduced range after several years of using an e-car. So take these effects into account before you buy, so that you are also satisfied with your e-car in the long term.

What is the average range of an e-car?

The answer to this question is continuously changing. If we refer to the e-cars available on the market at the time of publication of this article, which we also list in our listing, the average range of all e-cars is 412 km. It is important to note, however, that our listing also includes e-cars that are intended more for commercial use and high loads. These cars almost all have a low range, lowering the average. Just like that, there is a pretty clear correlation between purchase price and e-car range. The more expensive the e-car, the more range you can expect. That is why we have also calculated the price per kilometer of range in our table, so that you can easily find the range bargains.

Which e-car has the longest range? The winners by price range!

E-cars are now available in every price range. Since the subsidy you receive for your e-car depends on the purchase price, it is worth taking a look at the e-car range winners in the respective price classes. For a purchase price of up to €40,000, you will receive €4,500 in subsidies from the state from January 2023. For a purchase price between €40,000 and €65,000, you will still receive €3,000. In addition, there is the manufacturer's share, which until now has corresponded to the amount of the federal share without the innovation premium. The subsidy for e-cars with a purchase price above €65,000 will be discontinued, as will that for plug-in hybrid vehicles. If you are interested in more detailed information on the topic of e-car subsidies 2023, you can find it in our related article.

In the price segment up to €40,000, the manufacturer MG has two models in the top three: The MG ZS EV with a range of 440 km in first place and the MG 5 with a range of 400 km in third place. The duo is complemented by the Cupra Born, which makes it to second place with a range of 425 km. Unsurprisingly, you get a lot of range for your money with the winners in this price range. More interesting, however, is that the MG ZS EV, at €80 per kilometer of range, not only boasts the best value in this price range, but of all e-cars on the market. Since all three e-cars are at the upper end of the price spectrum in this segment, we have a little price-performance secret tip for you: The VW e-up! The small city runabout impresses with a respectable range of 250 km and, above all, the really fair new price of €21,421. In the end, that makes €86 per kilometer of range, also a top value!

The models in the price range up to €65,000 are extremely diverse. In the end, Hyundai's IONIQ 6 came out on top with an e-car range of 614 km, Tesla's Model 3 came in second with 602 km, and BMW's i4 came in third with 589 km. All three models have a similar base price of around €55,000 and thus a similar price per kilometer of range of between €88 and €96. If it does need to be a bit cheaper, the Cupra Born stands out as an insider's tip. The range-extended variant of the Born costs from €45,850, a good €10,000 less than the top 3, but still offers a strong range of 550 km. 83 per kilometer of range is also the second-best value of all e-cars currently on the market.

In terms of e-car range, the luxury class from €65,000 is currently clearly in the hands of Mercedes Benz. The manufacturer occupies 1st to 3rd place with the EQS 450+ (783 km range), EQS SUV (672 km range) and EQE (645 km range) models. In addition, the Mercedes Benz EQE with its new price starting at €66,402 and a price per kilometer range of €103 is also the "most efficient" in the entire category in terms of e-car range. If there had been another secret tip, it would have been the EQE, but thanks to its place on the podium, it is anything but secret!

Loading time: A factor not to be underestimated

Of course, the e-car range should not be the only decisive factor when choosing your new e-car. Especially if you plan to drive long distances frequently, you should pay attention to the charging time of your future e-car. Here, so-called fast charging is an option, with which charging processes with up to 350 kW are possible. By comparison, normal charging is only possible with up to 22 kW. Fast charging is not a standard feature. However, manufacturers often offer the option of increasing the charging speed for an additional charge.

In general, it is also advisable to provide a good charging infrastructure at home, if possible. One option here is to install a wallbox. Depending on where you live, the development of the public charging infrastructure has progressed to different degrees. So evaluate the situation on site individually and derive your measures for the power supply of your e-car from this.

What innovations are there on the subject of e-car range?

The e-car range is one of the most important topics around electromobility, but also around individual transport in general. Both the automotive industry and a large number of other players are constantly researching ways to optimize it. For example, research in the field of solid-state batteries by the Fraunhofer Institute for Material and Beam Technology IWS deserves special mention. By using solid instead of liquid electrolytes, space can be saved and thus the energy density of the battery can be increased. In addition to increased safety and potentially more sustainable production, there is talk of the technology increasing range by up to 50%.

Another example of research around e-car range is inductive charging. The principle is familiar from wireless charging in smartphones, but by embedding this charging option in roads and parking lots, the vision of unlimited range for e-cars may soon become a reality, and without any stops at the charging station.

Conclusion: A high e-car range is not only available for the big purse!

A lot has happened in the area of e-car range in recent years. With an average range of 412 km for all e-cars currently available on the market, you can go quite far. However, the absolute front-runners in terms of electric car range far surpass this. The Mercedes Benz EQS 450+ is currently far ahead of the competition with its range of 783 km, but with a new price starting at €109,551 it is anything but cheap. It is obvious that expensive e-cars tend to have more range. However, if you look at the price per kilometer of range, there are some surprises and insider tips even in the lower price ranges. For example, the MG ZS EV with a range of 440 km and a price of just under €35,000 is the price-range winner across all categories. But the Cupra Born also scores in the mid-price segment with a range of 550 km for just under €45,000.

Meanwhile, research is continuing to bring the range of electric cars to the next level. We will be surprised to see whether the solid-state battery, inductive charging or a completely different technological innovation will ultimately prevail. What is certain, however, is that range is currently one of the most important factors for end consumers when buying a new e-car.
